In 1957, Heinz Mack and Otto Piene opened the first of their so-called „Abendausstellungen“ [evening exhibitions], which could be seen for one evening in the studio spaces of the two artists, located at Gladbacher Straße 69 in Düsseldorf.

The fourth evening exhibition was crucial for the development of ZERO. For the first time, works distancing themselves from the Informel by reducing the pictorial means were on display. According to the memory of the artists, the name ZERO was established after the exhibition had closed.
