The first issue of the Magazine “ZERO” (edited by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene) was published on occasion of the seventh evening exhibition Das rote Bild (The red picture). This was the first time that Mack and Piene used the name ZERO.

The invitation to the United States, together with the exhibition at the McRoberts Tunnard Gallery in London and the participation at the Documenta 3 within the same year, was the highlight of the cooperation between Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker.

After the opening of the exhibition „Zero in Bonn“ at the Städtischen Kunstsammlungen [Urban art collection of] Bonn, the end of the cooperation between Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker was celebrated at Rolandseck station in Remagen.

The seventh evening exhibition consisted exclusively of works that had red as their dominating colour. For this exhibition, the first issue of "ZERO" magazine was published by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene.

The eighth evening exhibition, originally planned by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene under the title "Raster" [grid], focussed on the topic of vibration, which was an important topic for ZERO. On occasion of this exhibition, the second issue of "ZERO" magazine was published.

As certified by the gallery owner Alfred Schmela, he received 39 issues of the very first "ZERO" magazine, which was published on the occasion of the seventh evening exhibition "Das rote Bild", (The red picture), organized by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene in their studios. For this exhibition, the Galerie Schmela lent some works in their possession.

The exhibition did not have a title at first, but was later named after the catalogue text „Vision in Motion - Motion in Vision“ by Marc Callewaert. Even though his name was not shown on the poster, Günther Uecker also participated in this exhibition.

The exhibition was divided into two parts: "Confrontation", which included works of artists of different backgrounds, and "ZERO". The special feature of the ZERO-part was that the works were placed freely in the room with the help of stands, instead of being hung up on a wall.
